Yuri Gagarin was the first human to travel into space on April 12, 1961. He made one orbit of Earth in his capsule Vostok 1.
Alan Shepard became the first American to travel into space on May 5, 1961 on a suborbital flight in his Mercury capsule Freedom 7.
Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman tho fly in space on June 16, 1963 in Vostok 6. She to this day remains the only woman to fly a solo space mission.
Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space on June 18, 1983 aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on STS-7.
Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon during Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969.
