Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon “Gordo” Cooper, and Donald “Deke” Slayton – The Mercury 7 Astronauts, also known as the Original 7 and Astronaut Group 1, were selected in 1959.
